These days, blog subscription may not a very important things, since people tend to read what have been shared on their social media account. Subscribing a blog is a past thing, not many people subscribe to a blog anymore. People share things directly from their smartphones. No need to keep an update on a particular blog, because probably the content will be shared by their friends somehow. The culture of internet reading has changed.
However, for some people who like to read great content (I do mean it) from a particular source, such as a blog (like the one you currently read), subscribing may be a good thing, since some of this blogs doesn’t released its content everyday. A few us actually cares about quality, rather than a cheap content containing news only.
Why subscribers are important to us, bloggers?
First, your blog will gains authority if you have a decent amount of subscribers displayed on your feed count. Just imagine, there are two blogs with the same quality of content, but only one of them has more than 10k subscribers, while the other only have about 100 subscribers, which one do you prefer more?
Second, a high number of subscribers could attract advertisers to do some business with you. This is a money making opportunity.
Third, you can expect a stable traffic coming to your blog. Every time you release a new update, they will be notified, thus increasing the chance of getting a non-search engine traffic.
So, how do we get more subscribers?
1. Good content
This may sounds cliche, but the truth is the reason subscribe to a blog is because they want to read more, and they don’t want to miss a thing coming out of your blog. This is the main reason why people click that Subscribe button. Just to remember, news site don’t need to use any subscription service, since people only subscribe to a blog which is being updated only a few times a week.
If you always update your blog everyday, you don’t need to use any subscription widget. Your readers will be visiting your blog everyday.
2. Show your best posts on the homepage
Place your most popular post on the homepage, place it as a featured post. Consider this as the main weapon to attract new readers. Make sure to place it just above the fold.
3. Place your subscription box at the bottom of the post
This is to make sure they aware of the subscription box. There are cases where people are not aware of the existence of the subscription box, so you want to avoid this one. Also, encourage them to subscribes by offering them a free e-book or something else.
4. Ask your readers to subscribe
Instead of just placing the subscription box and leave them, hoping someone will subscribe, why not be proactive and ask them out to subscribe to your blog? Encourage them to subscribe by offering them something if your number of subscribers reach some points. As an example, if your blog get more than 10k of subscribers, you will give away an exclusive content on your blog.
5. Don’t display your feed count
Social proof is an actual thing. People do things because others do the same. If you see a feed count on a subscription box that says ‘0 readers’, what would you do? Do you click the subscribe button? Probably no.
On the other hand, if you see a feed count that says ‘121k readers’, most likely you will subscribe to the blog regardless if you’re really interested with the blog or not. Don’t display the counter until some points reached, as example, don’t display the feed count until 10k readers are achieved.
That is five tips on how to get more subscribers, however, there is a cheap trick to make your blog looks like it’s doing well, which is by showing fake counts of subscribers.
